A Heartfelt Return to The Modern College of Design: Recap of the 2024 Commencement Speech

I recently had the incredible honor of returning to my alma mater, The Modern College of Design, to deliver the commencement speech for the 2024 graduating class. Let me tell you, it was such a surreal and heartwarming experience… I’m still buzzing from it!

Walking through the newly expanded campus was like stepping back in time, but with a twist.

The familiar faces of the staff and instructors who shaped my journey greeted me warmly, and it was like no time had passed at all. Seeing the amazing talent from the new graduates was the cherry on top. Their portfolios were bursting with creativity and passion, and it was clear that The Modern continues to nurture some of the brightest minds in design.

Reflecting on my own journey, I shared stories about the blood (those relentless Exacto knives), sweat (hello, nerve-wracking portfolio presentations), and tears (we've all had those bathroom breakdowns, right?). These experiences not only built my resilience but also prepared me for the real world. It reminded me of why I founded Copperheart Creative—designing with heart, for people with heart.

One of the most touching moments during my speech was having everyone acknowledge their achievements and support for one another. We shared affirmations of pride and gratitude, and it was this beautiful, collective moment of connection and accomplishment.

It was a powerful reminder that while our journeys can be challenging, the support and camaraderie we find along the way make it all worthwhile.

Being able to give back to a place that has given me so much was truly a full-circle moment. The Modern College of Design played such a pivotal role in shaping my career, and standing on that stage felt like coming home.

To the class of 2024, my message was simple: embrace your unique qualities — your superpowers — and be brave as you step into the next chapter of your lives. Your creativity, resilience, and passion will undoubtedly take you to incredible heights.

1. Embrace Your Uniqueness

Your differences are your superpowers. What you may see as a flaw could be your greatest strength. Lean into what makes you unique and use it to propel your career forward.

2. Build a Strong Backbone

Developing 'thick skin' is essential in the design industry, but it's important to balance it with a soft front. Be resilient, but stay open and authentic. This balance will help you navigate challenges with grace and integrity.

3. Support & Celebrate One Another

This journey we’re all on? It’s immeasurably improved when we connect with one another and support our colleagues and coworkers along the way.

Make the time to acknowledge your achievements and those of your peers. Celebrate each other's successes and be there for each other through the tough times and in the wins. Everything is better when we can share it with others!
