Business ownership can feel so rocky at times, and I know for me personally, some days end in a ball of exhaustion and tears. I’m sure you can relate. This week’s guest has had his share of trials, and the wisdom and heart that’s grown out of those dark moments is what makes this interview (and this friend) so special. If you’re in a season of doubt or frustration, if you just some space to breathe or some hope and encouragement — this episode is for YOU.

Today I’m chatting with Tyler Dickerhoof. Tyler is a highly acclaimed mentor and advisor to entrepreneurs and executives on effective leadership, as well as the owner of Impact Driven Leader, which (shout out!) is such a cool community. Throughout the episode, Tyler shares his story, and is so generous with the vulnerable highs and lows of his business and personal life.

We discuss his journey to getting mentally and physically healthy, and what it took to make that shift. He shares the importance of showing up as yourself no matter where you are, and why leading with authenticity impacts long term. We talk about morning routines and the value of waking up early. Tyler shares the most recent trials he’s had to overcome and how a change in our perspective can shape our success and mental health.

This conversation was so juicy, and Tyler brought so much wisdom to every question I threw at him. He is literally a walking talking leadership book, and I left this chat feeling so empowered and understood. What a gift! I can’t wait to see how Tyler’s words impact you this week!

Today’s ceiling is tomorrow’s floor. My desire is to be better today than I was yesterday, with the intention to grow and learn, so tomorrow I am better than today.

The heart behind his business.

Tyler’s heart shines true through everything he pursues. Whether it’s his network marketing business, various speaking engagements, or his Impact Driven Leader community, Tyler is making an impact. From day one, his heart has led with legacy and he’s doing what he can to leave a positive one.

Throughout our conversation, Tyler shares his story and how the 2008 crisis really struck a chord. He realized that it was no longer just about him, that his heart needed a radical shift. He understood that it wasn’t the people that had the best individual performance that succeeded. It was the people who helped others accomplish more that succeeded. Since then, his education, leadership trainings, and business ideals have all centered around helping others live the life they’ve dreamed.

Today’s ceiling is tomorrow’s floor.

Tyler is passionate about self-development, and has made it part of his life mission to spread that message of transformation and possibility. “Be excited about the person you’re becoming everyday,” says Tyler. “If you are, then what everyone thinks doesn’t matter. I still have a long way to go, but I’m thankful and grateful for the person I’m going to become.”

Tyler teaches that when we work to bettering ourselves, we often reach for restrictions first. But he believes that’s the fastest way to failure. His advice? “Find something that makes you feel intrigued vs. restricting yourself.” If we move toward curiosity or simple changes one by one, it leaves room for grace.

It’s a learning experience.

When it comes to trials and tribulations, Tyler is an expert. He shares stories throughout the episode of personal hardships and grief, but what makes him special is how he’s overcoming them along the way.

“You only grow when you’re challenged,” says Tyler. If you’re not going through trials, you’re not growing. If you’re not growing then where are you going?” Tyler encourages us all to look at trials as learning experiences. When something difficult hits, when we are faced with big obstacles, asking “What can I learn from this” not only shifts perspective, but lightens the load.

Best Advice to your younger self.

“Live with the intention to be better today than you were yesterday and grow and learn to better than you are today. If we truly focus on that, we can give ourselves and everyone around us grace.”

Wisdom comes from two places, observation and experience. One of those is more painful than the other.
