7 Lessons in 7 Years: Navigating Business and Motherhood
CELEBRATING 7 INCREDIBLE YEARS!
🎂 Happy 7th Birthday to Copperheart Creative! 🥳
The number 7 is a magical one. It symbolizes intuition, wisdom, self-awareness, spiritual revelations, and significant positive shifts.
And boy, have the last 7 years been an incredible journey! As we celebrate this milestone, I want to share 7 invaluable lessons I've learned along the way that have helped me navigate the tumultuous waters of running a business while being a new mom to a 7-month-old.
Lesson 1: Inner Intuition
In the world of business and motherhood, your gut feeling is your secret superpower. Trust it. Whether you're making a business decision or soothing a crying baby, that inner wisdom will rarely lead you astray.
The only catch? You have to slow down and pause to hear it.
When you’re caught up in the chaos and daily overwhelm (of business or parenting), it’s easy to miss the sound of your intuition guiding you. This is when we start to feel lost and alone.
The truth is that you’re inner intuition is always available to you when you remember to give yourself space to breathe, reflect, and listen to what your gut is telling you.
Lesson 2: Balance Over Busy
Finding a balance between entrepreneurship and motherhood is an ongoing process.
At my recent Fill Your Cup Conference that we hosted, I heard keynote speaker Ciji Townsend share about how it's okay to adjust and readjust your balance as life evolves. That really hit home for me in this season. It's not about perfection, it's about adaptability.
You will have good days and bad days… better days and worse days. And that’s all a normal part of the ebb and flow of life. Being willing to continually adjust how you’re showing up, who is getting your attention, and what you’re prioritizing will help you maintain a better sense of balance and give you more control.
Lesson 3: Self-Awareness vs. Self-Sabotage
Running a business and raising a child both require a deep understanding of yourself.
Know your strengths, acknowledge your weaknesses, and have the courage to seek help when needed.
Being self-aware means owning the things you need to improve as well as the things you do well. But when you refuse to ask for help, admit that you’re in over your head, or see how things are veering off course – that’s when you’re moving into self-sabotage.
Set yourself up for success by being willing to honestly reflect and accept the things you’re not in a position to do well or be in charge of.
Lesson 4: Growing Pains
You'll experience countless "aha" moments as both a business owner and a parent.
Embrace these revelations because they're the building blocks of growth. Learning from your mistakes and being willing to grow will help you find a lot more success and enjoy the process more, too.
No parent knows what they’re doing, just like most business owners are out here trying things out, seeing what works, and learning as they grow!
Lesson 5: Holy shift
Running a business while being a new mom can be challenging (is that the understatement of the year?!), but it also brings about incredible positive shifts in your life. These shifts often lead to creative breakthroughs and innovative solutions.
When you’re a mom and a business owner, you quickly become quite adept at operating on the fly, rejecting perfection, and being efficient and economical with your time and resources.
The key is understanding that these shifts are impossible and leaning into the change and growth instead of fighting against it. There’s no going back to the “old you” before you became a mom, so it’s much more productive to get to know the new version of yourself and use your new skills and perspective to benefit your business.
Lesson 6: Seek Support
You don't have to do it all alone.
Building a support system, whether in business or motherhood, is essential. Lean on friends, family, mentors, and fellow entrepreneurs. These humans are the ones you can call to celebrate the wins or a shoulder to cry on—they've got your back!
Asking for help isn’t weak, it’s smart.
The truth is that the people in your life want to be there for you, as a business owner and as a new mom. Everyone may not understand your situation or get the fine details of what you do and how you’re struggling, but they don’t need to know exactly what you’re going through in order to support you.
Lesson 7: Magic in the mundane
The journey of motherhood and entrepreneurship is anything but ordinary. Embrace the big magic in the mundane moments – the late-night brainstorming sessions with a sleeping baby nearby, the small wins that feel like huge victories, and the love that fuels it all.
So much of business owner life and mom life is boring and routine. But instead of resenting that fact, embrace it with an attitude of joy and gratitude. Those small moments may end up becoming some of your favorites!
